Stylish home furnishings made of corrugated cardboard? It sounds unlikely until you see some examples and realize that some of the innovators working in this medium are making remarkable contributions to the field.

One of these innovators is Giles Miller, who studied furniture design at Loughborough University in the UK and continued his studies at London’s Royal College of Art. Some of his designs are being produced by the Italian brand Dovetusai. These include a wardrobe and grandfather clockwith whimsical yet functional lines.

“Cardboard as a building block is slowly gaining in appeal around the world. The 2000 Olympics in Sydney featured cardboard furniture,” writes CNET’s Elsa Wenzel, who also talks about Frank Gehry’s innovative work with the material. Gehry, the world-renowned architect, is said to have introduced his table and chair designs made of corrugated cardboard between 1969 and 1973. Design schools teach his concepts to this day.

Gehry’s unique cardboard furnitureInstructables give step-by-step instructions.

Gomi Style produced an informative and instructional video on making cardboard furniture. It’s an entertaining 6-minute piece about the topic, and has had almost a half million views to date.

It was the poet John Keats who said, ‘A thing of beauty is a joy forever’ and this does in fact apply to your choice of a dining table. It is your dining room table that you will be using day in and day out for many years to come, so it does make a lot of sense to pick one that is not only functional but also beautiful to look at.

To begin with think about the dimensions and shape of table that will suit your purposes and the shape and size of your dining area. Then you can decide what the kind of table you want to buy is.

The Leg Table:

The Amish specialize in many different kinds of dining tables and among them one of the most popular varieties is the Leg Table. As the name suggests, these tables are leg tables and are crafted on the clean simple and uncluttered lines. These may include drop leaf tables as well, which could be folded down from one or both sides to lessen the length of the table if there are issues of space, but the need for a larger table occasionally.

The Burlington table is a throwback to a more genteel time with its rectangular shape and federal design which incorporates a Queen Anne style foot with a straight leg and clipped corner top. The Brady table or the Georgetown tables give you the option of beautiful circular four legged tables. The Madison or the Mansfield tables give you the option of a boat shaped top which is both elegant and unusual.

Trestle Dining Table:

As the name suggests the trestle dining tables are made by the Amish furniture makers using frames or a braces as a support for the tables. These are tables that come with a variety of different supports as against the simple four legged variety.

The Arts and Crafts table is a classic, and personifies the Arts and Crafts movement with its legs that curve outward and the slatted based along with a circular one inch top. Then there is the Arlington table with its contemporary styled trestle. It is designed with a boat shaped top and sturdy base. The Craftsman Mission Table is another classic design with its slatted Mission style base that has built with superior mortise and tenon joints.

Pedestal Table:

Pedestal tables are again in a variety of different styles to suit individual tastes and needs. For instance the Caledonia style of pedestal table is a contemporary flare on a pedestal style table. It is available in round, square or oval table top shapes to suit individual requirements. The Camden Table is a unique dining room table with built in storage drawers under the base top and can be a real plus when space is tight. The Chancellor Pedestal table is for a more formal setting dining area and is a classic in its own right.

So remember when you make up your mind about a dining table, it is something that you will use for many years to come and should be one that is a thing of beauty and a joy forever!

How to Draw Cars – Beginner Tips & Tools for Success

Learning how to draw cars is not as difficult as you may believe. Many beginners when attempting to draw cars will fail at first because of that “I can’t do it” mentality. They will see all of the details, the shadows and the highlights and become intimidated and lose confidence. In order to succeed, to really learn how to draw, you must remove all preconceived notions about drawing.

Learning how to draw is really a matter of breaking down what you see into smaller parts or shapes. You have to look at the picture as a smaller step by step process. When you break things down like this the problem at hand becomes easier to draw. But before you go off and start to draw those cool muscle or race cars, you really need to understand a bit more about the supplies you will need. How else are you going to draw those cool cars?

Having good supplies is definitely going to make it easier to draw and more enjoyable, but it won’t make you a better artist. You must learn and understand the basics first. Quality equipment is an aid, but it is not a substitute for your skills or abilities.

The first thing you are going to need is a good surface to draw on. You will need a solid sturdy table, desk, or drafting table. Whatever you choose to draw on, make sure the surface does not wobble and is level. Do not settle for a cheap surface. It will only frustrate you and make things more difficult. Many artists like to work on a surface that is on a slight angle towards the artist which promotes a better posture. Being comfortable is very important.

Make sure you have good lighting. Learning how to draw cars is challenging enough. You do not need the frustration of poor lighting. Your lighting should be even so that there are no shadows or hot spots of light, so you may need more than one light source to draw with. There are specially made lamps for artists that produce light which mimics natural sunlight.

You can purchase these online or at art stores, but I have found that the professionally made lights for artists can be rather expensive. If you happen to live near a Home Depot or other home improvement center, try looking in their lighting department. I purchased my lamps there for under 20 dollars each.

As for what tools you should have on hand to draw with, there are no “One drawing tool fits all” formulas. You will have to experiment with different pens and pencils until you find the ones that are the most comfortable to draw cars with. It is probably best to have a variety of drawing tools on hand.

Many car artists have various pens, pencils, markers and even paints on hand to produce different effects. For instance, some car artists prefer to work with Prismacolor “Verithin” pencils for sketching fine lines and for light shading. Other artists prefer the convenience of mechanical pencils as there is no sharpening needed. Mechanical pencils are not the best for shading in areas however. So you see, having a variety of tools on hand to draw with is essential.

Paper is another item of personal choice. Again, you have to experiment. Just like pens and pencils, there are also a variety of drawing surfaces. Try your favorite pens and pencils on various surfaces. Drawing surfaces have different textures and thicknesses and your drawing mediums will behave differently depending on the surface and how you apply them. You may also find guides helpful to draw with. Some car artists prefer to use ellipses and straight edges to help create straight lines and circles, while others work free hand.

If you do not happen to live near any art supply stores, you can always purchase your supplies online. Just go to any major search engine and type in “drawing supplies” and you will find plenty of online shops. My recommendation is Misterart.com. I have been buying my supplies there for a few years now and my shipments are always delivered fast and in perfect condition.

I hope these tips and instructions have given you more insight on how to draw cars. The most important thing with drawing cars, or any art for that matter, is to never give up. Keep practicing. Practice every day if possible and keep a sketchbook of your work so that you can keep track of your progress. You will get the hang of this and learn how to draw cars.

Architect: Translating Visions Into Workable Spaces

You can see him sitting hours on end at his drafting table, his drawing lights on, gesticulating, talking to himself translating the images that the client conveyed into tangible and workable designs.

Architects are planners and builders. Their craft takes into consideration the availability of materials, principles of engineering, aesthetics, building codes, local regulations, structural principles and bill of the materials. He must be knowledgeable on the methods that are available to the builder, the ability to negotiate with the builder for the best cost and time frame possible and oversee the construction. Architects must have the capability of understanding the clients’ environment providing advice and translating the images that was conveyed into a final design. The architect is a planner and a builder. An architect affects landscapes.

Architecture is an old craft. It came from the Greek word arkhitekton or chief builder. Today however, a chief builder, a draughtsman and an architectural technologist may render architectural services but may not necessarily be called an architect. Architects like many professions are required to have a specialized education, a work experience and a license to practice. They are recognized at par with Doctors, Lawyers and Engineers.

It has often been said that what we eat is what we become. By extension, our homes or the edifices that we construct reflect very much what we are. Where we live affects in a very big way what we are trying to tell the world. It is a good approximation of the lifestyles we lead and the attitudes we take. Our homes for example tell people a lot about our preferences and our standards. These are some of the very important factors that the architect has to bring forward in building our homes and the edifices that we want.

Depending on the country where they are practicing their professions, architects are expected to have completed requirements and in many countries these can be stringent.

In the United States, before a person is designated the title of “Architect”, he is required to have a degree from schools accredited by the NAAB and must have an internship with a licensed architect for three years. After that he has to take and pass a series of examinations from the NCARB or the National Council of Architectural Registration Board.

In some cases though, a person who have not taken a degree in architecture but has worked for a licensed architect for ten years can be allowed to take Architect Registration Examination or the ARE. If he passes that he can be given a license to practice architecture.

In the United States, there are ways and type by which to earn a professional degree in Architecture. The first is the Bachelor in Architecture, which takes five years to finish. After that a documented apprenticeship of three years is required. There is also the Masters Degree in Architecture and the Doctorate in Architecture.

The pre-professional degrees are Bachelor of Arts in Architecture, Bachelor of Science in Architecture, the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Architecture and the Bachelor of Environmental Design these courses takes four years to finish.

All licensed architects in the United States use the suffix RA for Registered Architects. If the architect is a member of the American Institute of Architects, which is a professional organization that provides network services to architects in the United States he also suffixes AIA to signify his affiliation.
